How advance tax works

Advance tax means paying income tax during the year instead of all at once when you file. It mostly affects freelancers, business owners, landlords and investors whose TDS does not cover their full tax.

Due dateCumulative amount due
15 June15%
15 September45%
15 December75%
15 March100%

With presumptive income under section 44AD or 44ADA, the whole amount can be paid by 15 March. The interest estimate here rounds amounts down to the nearest ₹100 and counts part of a month as a full month. It does not adjust for capital gains or other one-off income that arises later in the year. The Income-tax Act, 2025 replaces the section numbers used here from 1 April 2026.
